Positioning Gyumri, Armenia as a cultural tourism destination
The project

Overview

Travel Gyumri runs guided tours across Armenia and Georgia, with a specialty that sets them apart from typical regional tour operators: genealogy and heritage travel for the Armenian diaspora, alongside standard sightseeing itineraries. That mix – fixed-departure group tours, custom heritage research trips, and a retail side selling regional goods – doesn’t map cleanly onto any off-the-shelf WordPress tour-booking plugin.

The Challenge

A typical WooCommerce or tour-plugin setup assumes one thing being sold: a product, or a straightforward date-based booking. Travel Gyumri needed several fundamentally different flows to work together on one platform:

1. Tours with fixed dates, capacity limits, and itinerary detail – not a generic bookable product

2. Bookings that could take a real deposit or full payment through PayPal, not just a “contact us” form

3. Genealogy inquiries – a structured intake for diaspora travelers researching family history, which is a lead-generation and research-scoping flow, not a purchase

4. Reviews tied to specific tours and departures, not generic product reviews

5. A retail shop running alongside all of the above, for customers who wanted to buy regional goods without booking a trip

No existing plugin combination covered this cleanly without becoming a patchwork of conflicting booking systems, so we built the core of the platform as a custom, purpose-built plugin rather than stretching an off-the-shelf tool past what it was designed for.

Our Approach

We designed the visual identity first – a palette of charcoal, apricot, moss, and stone. The signature interface element is a “boarding pass” ticket card – used across tour listings, booking confirmations, and itinerary details – which gave the whole site a sense of travel-document physicality appropriate to a company literally in the business of getting people somewhere.

From there, we built the platform as a custom plugin (travel-gyumri-core) alongside a matching custom theme, rather than assembling third-party booking plugins that would have fought each other over cart logic, capacity tracking, and payment handling.

Why It Matters

Travel Gyumri’s business doesn’t fit a single WordPress plugin’s assumptions, and forcing it to would have meant compromising on either the tour-booking experience, the genealogy-research flow, or the retail side. Building the core booking and tour logic as custom software meant each part of the business – group tours, heritage research trips, and retail – could work the way it actually needed to, on one platform, under one design system.
